Unity, Liberty and Justice for All

Privacy, Technology and Perspective

Unity, Liberty and Justice for All. This week, we will not address privacy or technology for, together, we all face more pressing issues—the integrity of our Constitution and the equal application of the rule of law.

In this post, we likely will add no novelty to those eloquent voices who have condemned the events that have unfolded over the past weeks.  Nevertheless, we want to make clear:

·      We stand with those patriots advocating for Equal Justice Under Law.

·      We stand for our Constitutional rights, including the right to peacefully protest.

·      And we stand against those who profile, harm or otherwise threaten our fellow citizens.

As former Defense Secretary James Mattis wrote in his statement released on Wednesday, “The words ‘Equal Justice Under Law’ are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.”

Our shared American values are defined for us early in our lives. Every American kindergartener affirms this enduring pledge each morning:

I Pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.

As we reflect on our Pledge, we should hear its pulse—the beat—a throb, like drums sounding out, over and over, for unity, liberty and justice for all.  “For all” means nothing short of everyone.  We must think of others because they, as American brothers and sisters, are indivisible from us under our flag. Our Pledge furnishes a precise and an agreed starting point for our American family to hearken to the Constitution, which has laid the foundation of this Republic, and come together inspired to strive towards that more perfect Union where the faithful promise is liberty and equal justice for all.
