Privacy, Technology and Perspective

This week, we’re simply itemizing the sundry patchwork of state consumer privacy laws in the United States and providing links to those laws, and attendant regulations, for our readers’ reference.

The following are the state laws currently in effect: CA, CO, CT, UT, VI

Soon-to-be effective laws and their effective dates appear below:

  • ·       July 1, 2024: FL, OR, TX

  • ·       Oct. 1, 2024: MT

  • ·       Jan.1, 2025: DE, IA, NE, NH

  • ·       Jan. 15, 2025: NJ

  • ·       July 1, 2025: TN

  • ·       Jan. 1, 2026: IN, KY

Note that other bills are pending—for example, in New York and Maryland—and Congress continues to work on federal consumer privacy legislation. As a resource for tracking pending legislation, we would also commend Husch Blackwell’s Privacy Law Tracker.
